Ready to elevate your interview game?
Check out our top tips for interview success:
1. Tech Check
For video interviews, test your internet connection. Download and test software and complete any updates required ahead of time.
If you are attending in-person, make sure you have copies of your resume, a notepad and pen.
Plan your journey and if you are driving, find out where to park before you get there. Arrive with plenty of time to spare!
2. Do Your Research
Research the company’s services or products and any recent initiatives or news articles.
Study the job description. Think about how your experience is relevant and prepare examples of projects and stories that speak directly to the job at hand.
3. Know Your Interviewers
Take a look at the interviewer’s LinkedIn profile or bio on the company website, to understand more about their skillset and background. Find ways to build rapport with any commonalities such as:
- Do you have any mutual connections?
- Have you worked at the same companies?
- Have you lived in the same areas?
4. Make a Great First Impression
Dress professionally for both in-person and video interviews. Ask about the company’s dress code and dress accordingly.
For video interviews, clear any distracting items behind you, or blur your background. If you are using multiple monitors, remember to direct your attention to the monitor that has the camera. Managers will miss opportunities to connect with you, if your head is always turned to the side.
5. Be Present and Be You!
Listen carefully to the interviewer. Keep answers concise and focused.
Provide specific examples that demonstrate your capability to do the job.
Use the STAR method in your answers. This provides a simple format to tell a story by sharing the situation, task, action and result.
6. Prepare Questions and Follow Up
Interviewers want to see that you are serious and enthusiastic about wanting the job.
Prepare a list of relevant questions. Ask the interviewer what qualities they think will make someone successful in the role. Use their answer to demonstrate how your experience relates to what they are looking for. You can also finish by asking about next steps in the hiring process.
Send a thank you email afterwards to each interviewer.
